The grassroots organization of LOBO UNITY was created in the spring of 2008 by staff and students. Its mission is to strengthen relationships between the school’s staff, students, families, and community members. To begin building community connections, a free, family oriented Lobo CommUnity fair was started in 2008. Since then the fair has grown from 50 attendees to 1500 in 2011. Over sixty booths hosted by various city government branches, private businesses, non-profit agencies, Elsie Allen High School clubs, and Southwest Santa Rosa feeder schools participate providing informational material, food, games, and live entertainment. Another event created in 2009 was Tamale Togetherness in which a dozen students and their mothers taught paying community members how to make tamales from scratch. Fifty participants left with their very own dozen of homemade tamales, recipe cards, and a full stomach! Students and their parent tamale teachers shared a special moment working together and felt extreme pride in sharing their Latino tradition. Currently, Lobo Unity was awarded a City of Santa Rosa Community Action Board grant of $1,000.00 to put Dinner and a Movie in the Park. We are in the planning stages for our fall of 2012 event. Planning is also under way for our fifth annual Lobo CommUnity Fair. In addition to inviting the community on to our campus, students go out in to the community and volunteer. For the past two years, over 200 students have volunteered at various community events such as the Santa Rosa Neighborhood Summit, Gran Fondo Bike Race, Fiesta de Independencia, Roseland Holiday Celebration, Youth Summit, Ecology Corp Creek Restoration, Cal Serves Tutoring, and the MLK Day just to name a few. More and more community members are recognizing the commitment to community Lobo Unity students are showing. Little by little, Lobo Unity is creating positive relationships in and around the community.
